ABOUT THE OPERA FILUMENA was composed by John Estacio with a libretto by John Murrell. It was commissioned by the Calgary Opera and the Banff Centre and premiered in Calgary February 1st , 2003 and was revived at the Banff Summer Arts Festival later the same year. FILUMENA tells the compelling tale of Filumena Lassandro, a young Italian immigrant to the Crowsnest Pass region of Alberta, who became involved with the bootlegging trade between Alberta and British Columbia in the 1920s. She was the last woman to be hanged in Alberta.
